Down in Tasmania!

05.27

For our final posting of the Great Christmas Rinehart Trip 2012, we present Tasmania.

We purchased a very pricey tour from the excursion desk, but they guaranteed a small tour group and Tazmanian devils and perhaps a platypus or two. So, we hopped into one of six 4×4 SUVs, ready to conquer the Tasmanian wild!

Our guide hurried us to a popular nature and wildlife preserve before all the other “tours” got there; and glad we did. By the time we left it was a madhouse!

First, the kangaroo enclosure

Feeding the Roos!
“The Wallaby wants the good stuff in your pocket mates!”
Then koala bears……
And a baby wombat……
However  cute the above critters were, we had frolicked with these marsupials’ brethren in Perth and we were eager to see one thing…  the Tasmanian Devil!  I was expecting it to spin around and look for rabbits but this cute little thing was not doing that.  Maybe the Saturday cartoons, lied to me.
“Turn out the lights!”
Rhonda was a feisty beast eager to snap up the raw bits of flesh the ranger was dangeling!
The next thing we did was drive up a very large mountain. We put the 4x4s through their paces, but were well rewarded. Tasmania is gorgeous!
“Yeah, pretty but cold Mom. Let’s get back in the truck!”
While usually the view is spectacular and breathtaking, our day was overcast and really, really cold.
“Why can’t you book the warm tours Carmen!”
“Gorgeous vista and well worth frostbite you sissies!”
“Please let us get back in the car Mom! “
Next we went hunting for a Platypus
“What exactly does it look like? Your kidding right?”
Pman in the foreground-”I am not leaving this spot until I see one!”
Daddy in the background-”Hey there is really good 3G reception here!”
No Platypus today so we hiked back to the charming little inn for a bite.
“It is fancy and delicious mommy!”
Finally, to wrap-up our day, we took a nature walk through a forest of giant Eucalyptus. Tasmania and Australia (the mainland) have over 800 different types of Eucalyptus trees and this forest is made up of largest.
This is one of the few Sequoia that was planted in the forest of giants as a “test”.
“Can I climb it?”
“Too high, nevermind!”
“Hurry up!”

We were treated to tea and scones at the Falls cafe and enjoyed slathering mounds of gooey cream on delicious hot scones. The boys were thrilled to get a hot chocolate treat! It was a great way to end our day:)
Finally,  we packed up  and left for the boat. On the way back we drove through some gorgeous terrain. As we past small villages and picturesque farms I couldn’t help but notice the occasional roadkill. It was of course marsupial in nature, but this blew my mind! Wombats, roos and all sorts of what I think of as “exotic creatures” littering the road losing the battle with the highway. Richard had a good laugh at my expense. I guess I will always be weird like that. LOL!!!

Another Indonesian Observation

2012
03.26

As in most places on this planet, the people of Indonesia need to file an income tax return.  However, unlike most places where people mail in their forms or use an online form, Indonesians go to the mall and go through their form with a government official before they are submitted.   So from now until the end of March, the malls will be filled with more than shoppers.  Take a look.
